Jerry C. said A must have for any Shay, Climax or Heissler afficianado.. I love these books on West Virginia logging trains, especially the geared Shay's. Well put together with a lot of great history of West Virginia logging. Only constructive criticism is that the proofreader didn't do a very good job. Grammatical errors are common. Otherwise I love this book. Thanks to Mr. Dixon for his research.. Perfect for modeling railroads using some of the bigger Shays Paul A. Smith Perfect for modeling railroads using some of the bigger Shays and Climaxes, especially early 1900s. Lots of great pictures of prototype railroading.. Gomer Jones said WV railroads-the series. I now have all five books(so far)in this series. If you are a fan of railroads, or a fan of West Virginia history, add this series to your library. The railroads played a major role in the development of West Virginia. Looking forward to more in this series.
A general chapter of logging in West Virginia serves as a backdrop for the appearance and use of these unusual locomotives.. This fifth volume in the West Virginia Railroads series is a general history of the geared Shay, Climax, and Heisler type locomotives that were so prevalent in West Virginia logging operations in the era from the 1890s through the 1950s. Included are overview histories of each type of engine followed by chapters showing photos of the engines as they were being used in woods in large and small logging operations
