DESCRIPTION:
JamesAuthor Nicola Upson brings legendary mystery writer Josephine Tey back for a third investigation in Two for Sorrow, the spellbinding follow-up to An Expert in Murder and Angel with Two Faces. “A new and assured talent….Nicola Upson is to be congratulated.”—P.D. Fans of P.D. James, Agatha Christie, and Jacqueline Winspear will relish this ingenious literary creation, as one of the most beloved mystery writers of the twentieth century, while doing research for a new novel based on a horrific case of multiple child murder in 1903 London, is drawn into a chillingly related hunt for a sadistic, present-day killer.
The case is intricate and surprisingly intimate, weaving in and out of two historical periods and featuring that Upstairs Downstairs class element.” (Library Journal (starred review))“Excellent. “This excellent entry in this highly recommended series provides all the classic detective components with a contemporary kick. Upson upsets readers’ expectations with a surprise that keeps the suspense high to the satisfying conclusion. Puzzle fans as well as admirers of psychologically rich crime authors such as Ruth Rendell will find a lot to savor.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“Upson illustrates the ripple effects of misdeeds here and her smoothly flowing dialogue and deftly handled plot mark this worthy addition to the series.” (Booklist)

Tey (itself a pen name) used 3 pen names for her writing and "public" activities, using her own name for her quiet daily life in Scotland -- and in neither her public or private lives did she discuss her sexuality. Whatever her private life was, it should not be made fodder for a writer's personal political concerns, which is what Upson does. (The author makes clear that she herself is gay and not only thinks Tey was as well but that it's her [Upson's} duty to out her.)Authors of historical fiction may fa. Not up to Speed Lady Haase Nicola Upson Two for SorrowAnd here is another one for sorrow. How disappointing was Ms. Upson’s book. I was ready for insight into the two women who murdered babies around the turn of the 1900’s. Instead, this drawn-out agonizing story of Tay’s inability to recognize “true” love when she finds it/or doesn’t know it draws itself upon many pages.Further, the unmasking of the woman who committed several murders to conceal her “true beginnings” could have been a large part of the tale. She is an usually strong character and I did want to learn more about her, such as her commitment to nursing . Sires said From Victorian Baby Farming to the Gallows and Beyond-- Audio Book Review.
