DESCRIPTION:
All that remained was their home and the freight-hauling business if sold, it would be at a loss. And to everyone's surprise, Sarah finds a way. The question from a kind neighbor woman, "What do you plan to do?," seemed impossible to answer. The most difficult decision comes when Sarah determines that the best thing for her little daughter's future is to send her away to boarding school. But the distance that separates them over the years cannot be measured in miles. Sarah was not trained for any job, and she had nowhere to turn. But Sarah resolved for Rebecca's sake to put her life back together and go on. When the day finally arrives that Rebecca comes home, both mother and daughter find themselves viewing each other from two different worlds. But the choices forced upon her by life on the frontier are very hard, especially the question of how to care for Rebecca. Only the thinnest strand of the past holds the mother and daughter together - The sudden death of her husband had left Sarah Perry and her baby Rebecca alone in their small frontier town. What hope is there of restoring the bond that once was between them?

What to do, how to do itlife is not what you hope for DeniseG How do you go home when you don't know what that is? This is an emotional, agonizing story carrying the reader througha story of loss, determination, sacrifice, pride, detachment and finding God. Heart-wrenching story has few light moments. It's a downer, ending expected. Hard case for what seems best at the time, that action may backfire.. "The story felt empty." according to MAB. "Too Long a Stranger" was a so-so book. I enjoyed "Roses For Mama," by Oke, much more. The plot seemed more relevant of today's family situations - I found that ironic. It seems Janette Oke didn't know if she wanted to focus on Sarah or Rebecca. It shifted main characters all of a sudden, with no hint of it. I couldn't feel for the characters - I don't think Oke developed them well, they had no dimension. It felt like Seth was thrown in the story to help the ending along. I didn't understand why Sarah would finally give into hiring help, when for more than 10 years she was agains. Did she run out of paper? This is one of the best Janette Oke books I have read. However, as usual, everything was wrapped up nice and tidy in the last chapter. I often wonder if Ms. Oke is running out of paper as she writes the last chapters of her books. Or maybe her editor allots her only so many pages (303 in this case) and she has to rush the ending. I would like to see her write a book on what happens to the characters after conversion and reconciliation. Or maybe give the woman some more pages!
