DESCRIPTION:
"Truly excellent content, a few linguistic notes" according to Gavinblood. Just finished reading this in all one sitting. Excellent plotting and follow-through. Not dumbed-down like a lot of fiction out there. Excellent pacing. The only thing, and it genuinely is minor, is the phrasing, i.e., "it is" when it clearly should be "it was," or "void" when the more natural term would be "empty." Minor, and only momentarily distracting, thoug. "an absolute turn pager till the end" according to Catherine Uy. Mr Kho has the making of a Sidney Sheldon and Dan Brown with his first novel. Type of book you can't put down till the very end. ending was unexpected but humanea far cry from the usual books with suspense and drama. the vision of the various sites in the book were well done, makes you want to check out the country. looking forward to the next book. As meticulous as the plot itself! The author is very meticulous in his description of the settings and the characters, a reflection of the main character's workings in the novel. I find Jeff Kho's style very engaging. The pace is fast yet concise.I couldn't put off reading it until I reached the last page.
A van carrying 10 school children, belonging to wealthy and influential families collectively worth over a billion dollars, is hijacked in broad daylight in the capital of the Philippines. But they also gain the trust of the remaining parents by releasing the children one by one unharmed and well fed while steadily feeding their fear they will follow through with the executions. This further compels the families to cooperate with the kidnappers instead of the authorities, who are forced to play catch up at very turn and twist while the clock slowly ticks away.. The kidnappers soon announce an unorthodox staggered and escalating ransom bidding system with the threat of executing the last two unclaimed kids. This forces the parents, which several wealthy expats, powerful politicians, and influential locals, to use their resources and connections, to try to outwit both each other and the police. The perpetrators gradually reveal their knowledge of intimate details of the victims’ families and friends and use these to avoid surveillance
