DESCRIPTION:

Disappointing- great writing, incomplete story Kirsty Storar I'm really quite sad to be writing this because I absolutely LOVE Margaret Atwood and was so excited at the start of this book but unfortunately I was very let down. The prose is typically Atwood and, thankfully, that is still beautiful and captivating and draws you right into this dystopian world but unfortunately the story just never gets going. It feels as though a game of chess is slowly being set up, piece by piece, building and building and once everything is in place someone decides they don't feel like playing anymore and walks away. There is no conclusion, many threads are left . Daniel said Like an Exotic Meal. I am not going to discuss much in the way of actual story. In a nutshell the story revolves around a dystopian future where infertility is the norm and the position of women has been reduced to the point where a select few are used as "breeding vessels". In other words they are less people and more property, though a prized one (in some regards). The Handmaid's Tale is best likened to eating an exotic meal. Its full of textures and flavors your unaccustomed to and while you can appreciate how unique they are you can't quite yet understand them or tell if you enjoy them, let alone explai. Powerful. Gorilichis One of the scariest books I've ever read, especially if you think that, in many countries, women really do live like Offred. The story is so powerful that I could FEEL what Offred feels her sadness and desperation. I know that considering the whole plot this is a minor thing but the fact that she feels awkward because she can shave her legs or armpits really got to me. Just a minor detail that moved me so much. This book matters.

Set in the not-too-distant future, in a terrifying world where religion is used as a tool of repression and social control, The Handmaids Tale is the story of a young woman, Offred, recruited for reproductive purposes at a time of plummeting birth rates. The gripping narrative switches between her memories of the old world where she was a working mother and the terrifying realities of her life as a state-controlled breeding machinea Handmaid

. The resulting society is a feminist's nightmare: women are strictly controlled, unable to have jobs or money and assigned to various classes: the chaste, childless Wives; the housekeeping Marthas; and the reproductive Handmaids, who turn their offspring over to the "morally fit" Wives. From Library Journal In a startling departure from her previous novels ( Lady Oracle , Surfacing ), respected Canadian poet and novelist Atwood presents here a fable of the near future. This powerful, memorable novel is highly recommended for most libraries. BOMC featured alternate. The tale is told by Offred (read: "of Fred"), a Handmaid who recalls the past and tells how the chilling society came to be. Fisher, Radford P.L., Va.Copyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc.
