DESCRIPTION:
A fine combination of romance, adventure, and morality, this classic novel of the frontier is an eloquent beginning for Cooper’s great wildernes saga—and an unforgettable introduction to the famous character who has been said to embody the conscience of America: the noble woodsman Deerslayer.. The deadly crack of a long rifle and the piercing cries of Indians on the warpath shatter the serenity of beautiful Lake Glimmerglass. Soon they are caught in the cross fire between a cunning enemy and two white bounty hunters who mercilessly kill for profit. The last of the Leatherstocking Tales to be written, though first in the chronology of the hero’s life, The Deerslayer is James Fenimore Cooper’s masterpiece. Danger has invaded the vast forests of upper New York State as Deerslayer and his loyal Mohican friend Chingachgook attempt the daring rescue of an Indian maiden imprisoned in a Huron camp
Such imperfections may be passed over on the printed page, but they are impossible to ignore when given voice. However, it's impossible to listen to it without thinking of Mark Twain's savage essay "Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offenses," in which he calls The Deerslayer a "literary delirium tremens." Very apt. . The book takes forever to go nowhere, and its dialog is a tortuous blend of stilted literary English and wholly imaginary frontier dialect. Narrator Raymond Todd reads descriptive passages just fine, but no one can make Cooper's dialog sound like real speech. This is better left to print editions. Since Cooper actually wrote this book last in
True Classic Larrydebull This was a truly great book. Being an outdoorsman myself I could see, smell, and feel everything about it. Living in tuis day where the geek is king. It was good to read of a man like Deerslayer. A bit wordy at times it was still well written. I only wish he had written more books.. I enjoyed this book I enjoyed this book. It had several surprising twists to the story that kept it interesting. While the dialogue is lengthy, it reveals a great deal of information about the attitudes and beliefs of late 1700 America I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in early American history.. A nice relaxing read A good book to relax too. Cooper likes to spend a lot of time on building the story and not as much action as some might like. However, when action does come, it is gripping. He definitely makes a captivating picture of Frontier America.
