DESCRIPTION:
A Prophetic Book with Many Layers T. Berner As this book is about to celebrate its 30th anniversary, many have noted the current world events which mirror the plot in the book - self-detonating terrorists, weapons of mass destruction which can't be found, a polarized politics in America - it is quite eerie and one wishes that Mr. McCarry had still been in the CIA in the 1990s, when he could used his foresight to do somethi. Better Angels McCarry is good as always, providing intrigue with an incredibly prescient plot 30 years before its time.. Mike Walsh said disappointing. The book seems to contain material edited out of other novels. The connection to the Christopher books is there, but tenuous. This is a "Washington" novel rather than a spy story, and there is not a single likeable character in it, which may help explain the moribund pace: perhaps the author's heart just wasn't in it.
Meanwhile, Islamic terrorists led by an oil-rich Arab prince, desperate to acquire nuclear bombs to use against Israel or major American cities, disrupt the presidential campaign through a series of bloody suicide bombing. The presidential race matches a tall, lantern-jawed liberal to a far-right former businessman with deep ties to the energy industry. In retrospect, the novel would prove to be prophetic. The Better Angels takes place in an election year close to the turn of the century in a deeply polarized America. Now back in print, the prophetic thriller from "the best writer of intelligence and political novels in the world" (The Boston Globe)When Charles McCarry's The Better Angels was first published almost 30 years ago, its premise--that terrorists would use passenger-filled airliners as tools of terror--seemed incredible. Finally the election itself is stolen, as one side hacks into computerized voting systems to change the tallies in key states. From the writer the New York Times Book Review called "the genuine article," The Better Angels is a thrilling and relevant masterwork.
Praise for Charles McCarry "There is no better American spy novelist."-Time "McCarry+s novels are among the best of out time."-Wall Street Journal
