The Beekeeper's Apprentice is one of those books that takes a well known fictional character, in this case Sherlock Holmes, and reimagines him in a new situation. This can be a disaster, but in this case it is a triumph. This book was first published in the 1990's and was not on my radar. The author has written quite a few sequels to this, which I look forward to reading.Sherlock is in semi-retirement in t. L. Porter said Intriguing!. I was a bit dubious on starting this book, and nearly dismissed it as a piece of fan fiction, where the author places an idealised, fictionalised version of themselves into a story with a "real" fiction character. But things picked up once the first adventure / case started. There are about four of these throughout the novel, and the author writes them brilliantly. They are exciting, fresh and suspenseful . "For all Sherlockians" according to Amazon Customer. I could physically feel my vocabulary growing as I read this book. I'm a sucker for a book that makes you feel smarter by the end of it, for a book that encourages your mind to expand and to raise you higher than you were before.
