'What a fabulous resource for kindergarten teachers and those interested in valuing the language of drawing further.' --Enjoy and Embrace Learning blog
The lessons follow a consistent format:what's going on in the classroom;what children need to learn next;the materials needed;the actual language used in the lesson;when children's literature is used, reasons for choosing the books and suggestions for other books;suggestions for other lessons.Martha and Mary Ellen show the thinking behind their teaching decisions and provide a way to look at and assess children's writing, giving us much more than a book of lessons; they present a vision of what beginning writing can look and sound like. In Talking, Drawing, Writing: Lessons for Our Youngest Writers Martha Horn and Mary Ellen Giacobbe invite readers to join them in classrooms where they listen, watch, and talk with children, then use what they learn to create lessons designed to meet children where they are and lead them into the world of writing. Katherine A Lapp said Amazing Resource. This book is WONDERFUL. It clearly lays out mini-lessons in a way that makes you feel like you are watching them in action. It lists trade books to use as examples to tie into workshop. The format of the book is very reader-friendly and is not overly technical. I love that it is centered on kindergarten writers, although it is certainly useful for other primary grades as well. There are also some good ideas about setting up workshop, strategies, management and assessing/monitoring writers. The book teaches you how to help Kindergarteners find their voices, to be. shawne Welcher said Do you want to Do you want to 3 - 6 year olds excited about being writers? Miss L Manni said Excellent resource for teachers of young children. A book that offers important insight to teachers of young children to illustrate the potential of young children to engage in high quality work (talking, writing and drawing). For teachers who are new (or teachers who want to improve the way they teach young children 'writing'), it provides the words they can use in whole group sessions to encourage and support children in articulating, drawing and eventually writing their stories - including children whose home language differs from the classroom language. Highly recommended.
