George Lichman said RISE THE DARK has all the best of Koryta!. RISE THE DARK is an example of what makes Michael Koryta one of the best. The book, the second featuring private investigator Markus Novak, builds on the foundation laid in the first Novak book, LAST WORDS, and focuses on great characters, a compelling plot with several unforeseen twists, dry humor, action, and even some romance. Beyond a traditional mystery/thriller, it also includes a little more than a touch of the paranormal, which seems to be one of Koryta's strengths: adding just enough to keep it interesting while not dominating the story.K. "A Sophisticated Reader's Thriller Writer" according to Horror Reader. I first discovered Koryta's work when he published SO COLD THE RIVER (which has a phenomenal first chapter), and he became a constant on my reading list after THE PROPHET (brilliant story of brothers, football, and murder). With last summer's perfect LAST WORDS, Koryta introduced private investigator Mark Novak and kicked off a thrilling new series.RISE THE DARK is the best thriller I've read this year. This is a thriller of the highest caliber that will dare readers to put it down before reaching the exciting climax.". Wonderfully eerie scenes and distinct thrills."Marilyn Stasio, New York Times"Koryta always uses setting to great effect in his bestselling thrillers In Rise The Dark, Koryta again constructs a hold-your-breath thriller around believable characters and the bonds, familial and romantic and ideological, that bind them.
