Disappointing and homophobic Disappointing and homophobic. Formula plot, usual for Doherty novels (someone dies in a locked room, investigator keeps listing evidence, streets are described with steaming crowds and dung, suspects are gathered in one room). This one adds stereotyped homosexual characters right out of the homosexual stereotyped characters in 1930's films--effete ring-bedecked hands, minced out of the room, swaying walk, dressed in drag, lusted after young men). And the murderer is a homosexual. In the meantime, the other suspects in the room are having affairs and the friar who solves the crimes is lusting after a widow in. B. Kingsford said Ok but not great. Good plotting and characters but I didn't care for the writing style.. "Very Enjoyable" according to sharlee. Before purchasing a book, I always read some of the worst reviews of the book. One reviewer suggested the book needed a good editor. I have only read one of the books in this series, but I didn't find any errors that distracted from the story. I can overlook the changes in spelling and missed punctuation if the story is enjoyable.I have read Doherty's Hugh Corbett series and wanted another series set in the medieval period. The two main characters of this book are Brother Athelstan and Sir John Cranston. Cranston, who is rude and crude, seems an unlikely hero, but paired with Brother Athelstan Doherty has cr
