A sweet, funny illustrated chapter book about a young girl with a lot of optimism, even if sometimes life makes it hard to be happy.

Darian Burns said Not Always Happy. Any Time Dani can't fall asleep, she adds up all the good things that have taken place to her in her life, ending with how excited she is to get her new schoolbag and go to grammar school for the very first time. However, just after she arrives there, she begins to fall victim to worry. Will she really like school? Will she make friends? Finally, after a couple of days she gets to know Ella. Ella becomes her best friend and they are . "Wonderful book about resilience in the face of life's trials" according to Flora Fung. 5 full stars for this book because of the following:1) Really sweet story about a little girl and how she faced the trials and traumas in her life, and came up triumphant every time!2) Great story to illustrate the fact that life isn't always a bed of roses but that we can face it head on with optimism and certainty that the light is at the end of the tunnel and that life always holds some wonderful possibilities; resilience is the k. "Charming and oh so funny" according to Susan Golden. All the other reviews are true: the joys and trials of early childhood are simply and appropriately handled, the pen and ink illustrations are superbly expressive, the theme that everyday cannot be joyous but many can be, are all well handled. Our heroine, Dani, is honest and feels authentic to her age and outlook. I would just like to emphasize that much this book is hilarious. So funny I ended up reading most of it aloud to my husb

The butterflies subside when she meets Ella, and they are soon fast friends. From School Library Journal Gr 1-3-Young Dani has what she considers a happy life, but she wonders if she will still be happy once she starts school. The story unfolds in short chapters, with just a few sentences per page and large, plentiful, black-and-white drawings. No redistribution permitted. The illustrations complement the narrative well, and will enable younger readers to feel a sense of accomplishment for tackling a lengthy chapter book. The difficult subjects are handled gracefully, allowing children to realize that happiness comes and goes, and that everyone has hardships to face.-Michele Shaw, Quail Run Elementary School, San Ramon, CA(c) Copyright 2011. When Ella moves away, Dani doesn't think she'll find happiness again
