This is a good read, though the author is at times grasping at straws to present love-life information about composers for whom there is little but speculation about their private affairs. Other composers left a wealth of titillating information about how they spent their time away from the writing table, and Mr. Howitt does a fine job with them. On the whole, a very readable book with loads of conversational fodder.
