Sweet story and great pictures. One of our family favorites!. "A sweet story with clever illustrations" according to Abby Connors. I was surprised to see that this book is apparently out of print (I get it from my local library). The young children I teach enjoy it very much. I think it's great for preschoolers because in order to spot the mother fish on each page, they need to match the color and shape pattern of the little fish, which sharpens their observation skills and even relates to math (matching patterns). Whenever I read it, kids get very excited when they can spot the bit of the mother peeking out from behind a plant or another fish. Aside from that, it's a sweet story about a little lost fish looking for his mom, which is very meaningf
Little Fish has lost his mother! Where, where, where can she be? As he searches high and low around the African watering hole, Little Fish spies many other strange animals with their mothers: Okapi, sipping water, sluppa-sup; Hippo, bathing baby, splish-a-splash; Cheetah, cleaning her cub scrub-a-scrub. But where is his mother? Will he ever find her? Young readers with quick eyes may spot his mother hidden here and there in the colorful collage illustrations of Jane Conteh-Morgan, and they will delight in the rhythmic repetitions of Nancy Van Laan's text. This is sure to become a read-aloud favorite for all ages.
From Publishers Weekly When an orange and yellow polka-dotted fish gets separated from his mother, his search for her takes him on a tour of underwater flora and fauna. When she drank, lippa lap, Little Fish's tail went SLAP!" Conteh-Morgan's (My Farm) childlike illustrations sizzle; with exuberant splashes of hot pastel paint on ripped paper, she's created a beguilingly exotic world. Yet in fashioning a territory, unfamiliar to young readers, for lost Little Fish's anxious search, author and artist make the reunion between parent and child all the more triumphant. .
