DESCRIPTION:

Noble is Professor of Theology at Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri, and also Senior Research Fellow in Theology at Nazarene Theological College, Manchester, UK. T. A. He was recently president of the Wesleyan Theological Society.

Noble examines what basis may be found for Wesley’s understanding of sanctification in the central doctrines of the church, particularly the atonement, the doctrine of Christ, and the most comprehensive of all Christian doctrines, the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. What he presents is a fully trinitarian theology of holiness. This book seeks to develop Wesley’s synthesis of patristic and Reformation theology in order to consider how Christian “perfection” can be expressed in a more nuanced way in today’s culture. Teaching on the sanctification of Christians using the difficult word “perfection” has been part of Christian spirituality through the centuries. John Wesley was the one major Protestant leader who tried to blend this ancient tradition of Christian “perfection” with the Reformation proclamation of justification by grace through faith. Medieval theologians such as Bernard of Clairvaux and Thomas Aquinas developed the tradition and wrote of levels or “degrees” of “perfection” in love. However, the doctrine has not fared well among Protestants. The Church Fathers spoke of it and Augustine of Hippo particularly contributed his penetrating analysis of human motivation in terms of love

Drawing upon his recently delivered Didsbury Lectures and his postgraduate teaching, Tom Noble provides a lively, clear and balanced review of the Christian Doctrine of heart holiness, also called entire sanctification, and Christian perfecting. From a broad historical review, through John Wesley's understanding and. Jim Abrams said A responsible treatment of a difficult subject. So much of popular christian theology is a mile wide but only an inch deep. Dr. Noble's treatment of Christian Perfection as related to the Holy Trinity is a deep treatment of an often misunderstood biblical concept. I appreciate his ability to both clear up the misconceptions of Christian Perfection while anchoring. John Calhoun said Holy Trinity is basis of Christian perfecting. This is a major work that clearly represents Wesley's pastoral theology accurately and puts it in the context of Scripture, Experience, Reason and Tradition. Moreover, it breaks new ground in Wesleyan studies regarding the primary foundation of the Holy Trinity as the ultimate essential truth in expressing the natur
