DESCRIPTION:
This abridgement of the world's most authoritative dictionary of ancient Greek is intended chiefly for use in schools. To this end, some of the more specialized words relating to medicine and science have been excluded, whilst words from works of particular relevance to school usage have been retained, and the number of irregular verb tenses expanded.
Avoid this one and get the intermediate lexicon! This is a review of the smallest version of Liddell & Scott's lexicon ("Little Liddell"). I've long felt it inadequate, but today let's try a controlled experiment. Can we use it to read the first two pages of Xenophon's Anabasis?(Xenophon's "Anabasis" has a reputation as a straightforward narrative written in a very clear style--it's what schoolboys used to cut their teeth on, before teachers grew worried that it was too boring to keep students interested in Greek.)In these first tw. "Abridged Edition is an Excellent Lexicon" according to David Bennett. This review is for the Abridged Liddell-Scott LexiconI own the Intermediate sized Liddell as well, and I must say I actually prefer the smaller one. When I took a class where we read "The Apology of Socrates" by Plato, my professor recommended avoiding the Intermediate edition. At first I thought perhaps he was wrong, and I used it to translate some passages. After spending a lot of time sorting through it, I found that I agreed with him. The Intermediate Liddell does have locations . This dictionary is a life saver! Seth Jeppesen I bought this Ancient Greek Lexicon in order to help me translate a play by Menander for my senior thesis. Very seldomly am I unable to find the words I'm looking for. Many of the obscure forms of the verbs are listed and refer the reader back to the main entry. I highly recommend this item.
